Adelaide United crush Sydney FC 2-1
Bottom of the table Sydney FC suffered more heartbreak Monday night, crashing to a
dramatic 2-1 loss to A-League leaders Adelaide United at Sydney Football Stadium.
Winless Sydney led 1-0 at halftime through an Alex Brosque penalty but Shannon Cole
conceded an own goal and Adelaide pinched a winner in stoppage time through
substitute and former Sydney Olympic player Iain Ramsay.
Sydney gleaned just two points from their run of three straight home games and they
sit 15 points behind Adelaide and six outside the playoff spot.
It looked as if Sydney's wretched luck this season might have changed for the better
when Brosque scored a 40th minute penalty, awarded for what appeared just a gentle
shirt tug by former Sydney defender Iain Fyfe on Stephan Keller.
However, 12 minutes after the break Adelaide equalised when Sydney defender Cole
diverted a Lucas Pantelis cross into his own net.
Adelaide played the neater football in the first half hour, but Sydney took control
after the visitors' two danger men, Argentinian midfielder Marcos Flores and Dutch
striker Sergio Van Dijk, were substituted with injuries early in the second half.
Sydney enjoyed a purple patch after the equaliser, but couldn't find the net with
Adelaide goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic pulling off good saves to deny Hirofumi
Moriyasu and Mark Bridge.
Bridge headed over the bar from close range just before the end, but Ramsay
delivered a sickening blow to the home team when he steered home a cross from Robert
Cornthwaite in the 91st minute.
