Health officials on alert for influenza at two camps for displaced persons

BANGKOK, Oct 3 -- Thai public health workers are on alert for a possible outbreak of influenza at two camps for displaced persons in the northern province of Mae Hong Son, Dr Supan Srithamma, a spokesman of the Public Health Ministry, said Sunday.

Provincial public health authorities are monitoring whether there are now any influenza patients at one camp in Khun Yuam district and another in the provincial seat.

Close monitoring and limited access to the camps followed the recent outbreak of influenza at two other camps in Mae Hong Son, according to the spokesman.

Patients at the two camps have been treated and are now recovered from the disease, and no new victims have been reported, the spokesman said.

The cumulative number of influenza patients since the beginning of 2010 until September 25 nationwide stood at 66,090 of which 94 died, according to statistics released by the ministry. (MCOT online news)
