PM says tighter controls will reduce arms smuggling on Thai borders

BANGKOK, Oct 3 -- Stringent measures are being applied by concerned officials to prevent weapons being smuggled into Thailand along the Thai border should help reduce the threat of violence in the capital and upcountry, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Sunday.

Speaking to journalists at the airport before leaving for Brussels to attend the 8th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), Mr Abhisit said he had received a report from Thailand's chief of police on measures to be mapped out to prevent frequent bombing, and regarding two hand grenades thrown on the roofs of chophouses near Pratunam intersection at near midnight Friday night.

One grenade exploded in mid-air while the other was a dud, and caused no casualties.

Mr Abhisit said the bombing incident was unrelated to domestic politics.

Acknowledging that the explosives used to cause disturbances could have been smuggled into Thailand from the borders, Mr Abhisit said it is difficult to prevent them from being carried in.

However, the situation should improve after the authorities have adapted measures and found those responsible for the series of violence.

It is too early to say that politicians were involved in the unrest, the prime minister said, but police are watching suspects, he added. (MCOT online news)
