Iran sends major aid convoy to Pakistan

TEHRAN, Oct. 3 (MNA) – Iran’s largest humanitarian aid convoy arrived in Pakistan on Saturday, announced Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar.

The aid, which was transported by 150 trucks and 30 freight cars, is worth 10 million dollars and weighs 3000 tons, Najjar said on Saturday.

The aid cargo - containing food, tent, blanket, medicine, home appliances, and water - was sent to Pakistan through border near the southeastern city of Zahedan, Najjar said.

He went on to say that Iran’s Red Crescent has set up 24 relief camps and 7 clinics. Now, he said, 150 Iranian physicians, nurses, and relief workers are giving services to Pakistanis.

The interior minister expressed Iran’s readiness to help reconstruct the flood-stricken areas.

He added that two other cargoes weighting 700 tons and 400 tons will be shipped to Pakistan from Bandar Abbas and Chabahar ports in the near future.

The minister also said following the Supreme Leader’s call for an immediate assistance to Pakistan, the government earmarked 100 million dollars for the reconstruction of Pakistan.

Devastating floods in Pakistan has affected more than 17 million people.

The UN has called on the international community to step up relief efforts to help the flood-hit Pakistanis.

The relief agencies have warned that aid is too slow to arrive for millions without clean water, food and home.
