Sydney FC will bounce back, says Coolen
Adelaide United coach Rini Coolen is tipping surprise A-league cellar dweller Sydney
FC to have a mid-season revival - he just hopes it doesn't start on Monday against
his league-leading outfit.
The Sydney Football Stadium encounter comes after a stunning six-month turnaround in
the fortunes for both clubs.
Sydney won the title in 09/10 and Adelaide finished last.
The defending champions are still awaiting their first victory this season, while
unbeaten Adelaide have accrued 18 points from their eight games, including three
from a 3-1 away win over the Sky Blues four weeks ago.
"They (Sydney) are a really good team with a lot of good players and I believe they
will be a lot of positions higher than they are now," Coolen told AAP.
"They will be winning games I'm sure, because they have a lot of good players but
they've just got to wait until after our game to do that.
"There is not so much difference between clubs, everybody can beat each other, I
think there is not so much difference in the levels.
Sydney coach Vitezslav Lavicka believes making minor adjustments in each area of the
field can lead to a change of fortune for his ailing club.
"We sometimes need to be more responsible in defence and improve the quality in the
last third and make not too many turnovers in the middle third," Lavicka told AAP.
"Small details only, but small details make a big difference."
Sydney striker Mark Bridge, who is looking for his first goal of the season,
suggested his team needed to be more ruthless in front of goal.
"We're doing too many passes and not having that killer instinct at the end of it
and finishing teams off," Bridge told AAP.
He thought what Sydney needed most was a bit of luck.
Lavicka agreed there had been a shortage of that precious commodity this season.
"Luck is part of the game. We had luck last season and this year luck doesn't come
to us yet, but we are staying positive," Lavicka said.
Czech-born Lavicka said he had never experienced such a bad start in around 15 years
of coaching.
For the first time in his tenure, Lavicka will have to do without Korean defender
Sung-Hwan Byun, who has a hamstring strain.
Lavicka said he could either bring in Antony Golec or Matthew Jurman for Byun or
move Scott Jamieson into the left back position.
Adelaide will be missing an important player of their own, Matthew Leckie, the
league's latest young player of the month.
"Of course a player with the skill of Leckie is a loss, but we have to handle it
with the rest of the players and I think we can do that," Coolen said.
In early matches of week nine, Gold Coast scored a 3-1 home win over Wellington,
with Bruce Djite netting twice at Skilled Park on Friday night.
Also consolidating a top-four spot were Central Coast, after Dutch defender Patrick
Zwaanswijk's stoppage time winner in their 3-2 home victory over North Queensland at
Bluetongue Stadium on Saturday.
Football Federation Australia are set to review a halftime incident in which North
Queensland coach Franz Straka allegedly manhandled the fourth official Kris
Griffith-Jones on the sideline.
