.Parliamentary elections in Latvia held in quiet atmosphere - CEC head.
RIGA, October 3 (Itar-Tass) -- Elections to the Latvian parliament
were held in a quiet atmosphere, no violations were reported, although
there were some amusing incidents, head of the country's Central Election
Commission (CEC) Arnis Cimdars told a news conference late on Saturday.
According to the CEC head, some voters tried to take part in the
polling showing their driving licenses, powers of attorney or certificates
of lost passports. Some left filled-in ballot papers along with envelopes
at polling booths, and one of the envelopes taken from the ballot box was
found to contain a five-lat ($10) banknote.
Apart from it, a woman reported to the Central Election Commission
that her husband had taken part in polling with an expired passport. She
said she had betted with her husband that the trick would not work, but it
did. Another elderly woman, who had wanted to cast her vote at home, in
the long run refused to do so, claiming she had waited CEC representatives
too long.
The country's security police said it had received 20 reports of
possible attempts to temper voters, but neither of them turned to be true.
Latvia's population is about 2.3 million people, of which 1.6 million
are eligible voters. According to the Central Election Commission, a total
of 934,976 voters, or 62.62 percent, took part in the elections. Under the
national legislation, parliamentary elections are valid regardless of the
voter turnout.
Some 365,000 of the country's residents, Russian-speakers who had been
stripped of the Latvian citizenship after the collapse of the former
Soviet Union, are deprived of the right to vote.
