Peaceful n-program, Iran’s right: Pakistani analyst

Islamabad, Oct 3, IRNA -- Shamshad Ahmed Khan, former Foreign Secretary of Pakistan, on Saturday said that it is democratic right of Iran to develop nuclear program for peaceful means.

Talking to IRNA, Khan said that Iran's nuclear issue can only be resolved through dialog and not by sanctions.

Khan also stated that he was against the idea of sanctions adding that it is probably not possible to get favorable results out of these exercises.

Iranian Chairman of Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Alaeddin Boroujerdi has said that future talks between Iran and the 5+1 group will bring together new faces, including negotiators from some friendly nations.

He said countries that vote independently and have cordial relations with Tehran will be allowed to take part in the negotiations.

Shamshad Ahmed Khan expressing his views said that Iran’s nuclear issue should be resolved through dialogue and the talks between Iran and 5+1 group will definitely help in solving the issue.

The analyst expressing his views said that dialogue is better than confrontation but the dialogue should be result orientated.

Boroujerdi has also said that 'Western countries should know they will get nowhere by adopting resolutions, [exerting] political pressure and [imposing] sanctions.'

Shamshad Ahmed Khan was of the opinion that Iran being signatory of Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) can use nuclear energy for peaceful means.

He added that sanctions don't lead to any thing as countries do not make concessions under pressure.

The intellectual added that the adverse impact of the sanctions would be the human sufferings. He believed that difference in approach on world issues should not become cause of sanctions.

“I am against sanctions as Pakistan has itself been a victim of sanctions”, said Shamshad Ahmed Khan.

On September 22, foreign ministers of the P5+1 -- China, France, Germany, Russia, the UK and the US -- announced they seek an 'early negotiated solution,' which 'restores international confidence in the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program.'

Tehran has announced its readiness to resume talks on its nuclear program stating that any negotiation must be conducted within the framework of the May 17 declaration./end
