Mariners steal 3-2 win over N Qld Fury
Central Coast waited until the dying moments in Gosford on Saturday to steal a 3-2
A-League win from a weary but gallant 10-man North Queensland team.
Holding a 1-0 advantage at the break, the Fury, who have now played three gruelling
matches in eight days, were reduced to 10 when Dyron Daal was sent from the field in
the 79th minute after a second yellow card.
Just a minute before Daal's dismissal, the Fury had seemingly denied the Mariners a
comeback win when Mark Hughes headed in an Isaka Cernak corner to level the scores
at 2-2.
Hughes' strike came after striker Matt Simon and diminutive Argentinean midfielder
Patricio Perez had cancelled out Simon Storey's first-half opener for the Fury.
But it was Dutch defender Patrick Zwaanswijk who sent the 6656 fans at Bluetongue
Stadium home happy when he headed in the winner in the 92nd minute after some sharp
work by New Zealand international Michael McGlinchey.
The result maintains the Mariners' unbeaten home record in 2010, while it takes away
some of the pressure on referee Kurt Ams, who appeared to miss a clear-cut penalty
for Perez midway through the half.
Daal's dismissal also came after a non-call by the young referee, who refused to
blow for a free-kick when young forward Chris Payne tumbled over just outside the
Mariners' penalty area and the Dutch Antilles international argued his way into a
second yellow card.
Fury coach Franz Straka could also find himself in hot water after appearing to
manhandle fourth official Kris Griffiths-Jones on the sideline at the end of the
first half.
Griffiths-Jones was in no mood to remonstrate with Straka after he pushed his arm
aside and directed him to make his way up the tunnel.
The defeat ends a three-match road trip for the Fury which also included a 2-1 away
loss to Wellington last weekend and a 1-1 draw with Sydney FC on Wednesday at the
SFS.
