Police Chief: No further emergency decree enforcement, except law extension in Bangkok, adjacent provinces

BANGKOK, Oct 2 - Thailand's national police chief Pol Gen Wichean Potephosree on Saturday said no additional enforcement of the state of emergency will be announced, except for the extension of the security law in the capital and its adjacent provinces to maintain law and order following reports of possible political gatherings during the month.

Gen Wichean remarked after meeting Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva at Government House for 30 minutes on security measures to handle political demonstrations in October to commemorate major historically-political related incidents.

Gen Wichean said the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) has sought police cooperation in preparing "appropriate protest sites" to facilitate the security operation.

The police chief added that a special centre has been set up to monitor any possible violence. The centre is now integrated with relevant agencies such as the army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit and the Quartermaster's Department to prevent incidents and monitor "sensitive areas."

Following reports of politicians' involvement in recent bomb attacks in Bangkok, Gen Wichean reaffirmed there is no clear evidence which links the incidents to suspect politicians or their close aides.

However, he conceded there were two or three names of politicians already in the CRES arrest warrant list and more time is needed for investigations such as DNA testing.

The prime minister said before the meeting with the national police chief that police will be the main agency to oversee the situation by setting up more checkpoints and conducting more patrols to boost public confidence regarding personal safety.

Defence Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan told me that he will adjust and improve the efficiency of the CRES to handle the situation, Mr Abhisit said.

Gen Prawit will succeed Deputy Prime Minsiter Suthep Thaugsuban to direct CRES as Mr Suthep plans to resign by next Friday to run in the Surat Thani Constituency 1 by-election.

Mr Abhisit is scheduled to leave Thailand for Brussels to attend the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) October 3-6. He has assigned Mr Suthep as caretaker with authority to make decisions in every matter. (MCOT online news)
