Commercial bank loans grow 7% in Jan-Aug period
BANGKOK, Oct 2 – Loans by Thailand's commercial banks during the January-August period grew 7 per cent against the 9 per cent targeted for the whole of this year, according to the Bank of Thailand (BoT).
BoT Deputy Governor Krirk Vanikkul said the loans provided in the banking sector had grown gradually since early this year while non-performing loans (NPLs) continue to be not worrying.
Regarding a reduction of fees collected for transactions by commercial banks, he said their fee-based incomes at present are neither too high nor low. Even so, the central bank would monitor and supervise the fees to ensure they are collected at an appropriate rate.
Mr Krirk affirmed that the main income of commercial banks stemmed from lending, not fee collections as many in the public understood.
Currently, fee-based incomes earned by commercial banks account for 20 per cent of their total revenue. (MCOT online news)
