Defence Minister Prawit set to succeed Deputy PM Suthep to direct CRES
BANGKOK, Oct 1 -- Defence Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan will succeed Deputy Prime Minsiter Suthep Thaugsuban to direct the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) as Mr Suthep plans to resign his post by next Friday to run in the Surat Thani Constituency 1 by-election, according to National Security Council (NSC) Secretary-General Thawin Pleansi.
The by-election will be held on October 30 to choose a replacement for former Democrat MP Chumphon Kanchana who faced a five-year ban from politics for submitting a false assets statement.
Mr Thawin spoke after meeting with Mr Suthep at Government House Friday afternoon.
He said Gen Prawit's appointment will be proposed to the Cabinet for approval when it meets Tuesday.
The Cabinet will also consider whether to lift the emergency decree in Bangkok, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Friday lifted the state of emergency in three more northeastern provinces -- Khon Kaen, Udon Thani and Nakhon Ratchasima,
At present, the state of emergency remains in effect in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan and Pathum Thani.
Mr Suthep is expected to resign as deputy prime minister before October 8, the last day for registration by candidates in the by-election. Mr Abhisit will take over responsibility for security affairs from him and would assigned other security related ministers to supervise some security tasks.
Mr Abhisit on Friday also held a meeting with Gen Prawit, Mr Suthep and Mr Thawin to discuss security matters.
Meanwhile, Mr Abhisit had appointed new Army chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha as the chief officer in charge of resolving the emergency succeeding Gen Anupong Paochinda who has retired.
In related developments, Acting Police Chief Pol Gen Panupong Singhara na Ayutthaya who head a committee to investigate the four recent Bangkok bombings showed reporters sketch of three suspects involved in the bombing incidents.
Three suspects were named as Mongkol Sarapan, Thanadej Akeapiwatchara and Somkiat Saraniam.
Gen Panupong said that police knew who was behind some bombing incidents that occurred in Bangkok but lack sufficient evidence to arrest the suspects. (MCOT online news)
