Turkmenistan seeks to boost electric power export.
ASHGABAT, October 1 (Itar-Tass) - The third international exhibition
on the basic trends of development of Turkmenistan's electric power was
unveiled in Ashgabat on Friday and brought together over 50 foreign
companies from 17 countries.
"Today Turkmenistan's electric power industry gradually increases
exports to Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan," President Gurbanguly
Berdymukhamedov said in his greeting message. "For many years our
population has been receiving natural gas and electric power at much lower
prices than those in foreign countries."
"The authorities create all necessary conditions for drastic
modernization of the country's electric power industry, which is one of
strategic areas of the domestic economy," he said.
Turkmenistan's energy potential is export-oriented. In 2010 the
Central Asian republic announced that it will build new electric power
transmission lines running to Iran and Afghanistan and will resume
electric power supplies to Kazakhstan.
Under the republic's social and economic development strategy for
2011-2030 the electric power output will reach 25.5 billion kWh a year and
its export will grow to 11 billion kWh a year.
In January-August Turkmenistan's electric power production increased
by 5 percent to 10.5 billion kWh, of them the republic exported 1.2
billion kWh and supplied 1.4 billion kWh free of charge to the local
population.
