Deputy BoT Governor Bandid to seek AMRO chief's post

BANGKOK, Oct 1 – Bank of Thailand (BoT) Deputy Governor Bandid Nijathaworn on Thursday revealed he had decided to quit his post because he wanted to contest for the directorship of the ASEAN +3 Macroeconomic and Research Office (AMRO).

He affirmed the decision was not made because he was not promoted to the central bank governorship or because he felt uneasy working further with the bank.

Mr Bandid said he had discussed with the new central bank governor and BoT Board of Governors Chairman M.R. Chatumongkol Sonakul about the matter before making his decision.

He said he would apply as an independent candidate from Thailand to compete with other contestants from many countries for the top post.

“I will try to the utmost of my ability to compete for the post. I decided to resign [from the BoT] because I want to be independent. Should I fail to get the post, I will return to work in Thailand,” he said.

Asked whether he would come back to work with the central bank, Mr. Bandit said it depends on the policy adopted in the future.

He said he would work with the central bank until the end of October.

“I want to thank all of my colleagues for working together with me throughout the past 20 years at the central bank,” he said.

The BoT Board of Governors on Thursday approved Mr Bandid's resignation as deputy governor of the central bank, effective November 2010.

Singapore-based AMRO is responsible for giving financial assistance to countries in Southeast Asia through the fund of $120 billion established under the Chiang Mai Initiative (CMI). (MCOT online news)
