Five killed, three wounded in Pattani shooting

PATTANI, Sept 29 -- Five people were killed while three others were wounded after a group of presumed insurgents opened fire at people near a fruit stall Tuesday night in strife-torn Pattani's Sai Buri district, said Pol Col Amnart Dee, superintendent of Sai Buri police station.

Local police on Wednesday gathered 24 spent bullet cases of from an AK assault rifles, a 9mm pistol and the fire-damaged pickup truck of the suspects at the crime scene for further investigation.

According to the police, the dead victims were four men and one woman-- Srivichai Wiset, Puwanart Muangmaithong, Mapairu Kayumee, 18, and Muslan Yuso, 23, Anong Phokom, 35.

Meanwhile, the three injured survivors were a 10-year-old girl Nuainee Jaetae, her brother Adulbasi, 8, and Pornchai Intasri.

The trio currently are in stable condition after receiving medical treatment at Sai Buri hospital. The initial investigation found that presumed insurgents fired volleys of bullets at both customers and fruit vendors at an open-air fruit market in Sai Buri Tuesday night.

The assailants later set afire a pick-up truck before fleeing to Kapho district.

Police assumed that the attack was aimed to incite unrest in the region.

Over 4,300 people have been killed in the three southernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat since the insurgency resurfaced in 2004. (MCOT online news)
