Medvedev ends his visit to China.
SHANGHAI, September 28 (Itar-Tass) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev
is ending his visit to China on Tuesday. He will attend the opening of
Russia's Day at the World Expo-2010 fair.
The Russian president will meet Chinese Vice-President Xi Jinping.
Together, they will visit Russian and Chinese pavilions. After ending his
Shanghai program, Medvedev will leave for Russia.
"September 28 has been declared Day of Russia at the world
exhibition, and I will certainly be present there," Medvedev said in an
interview with the Chinese newspaper Remin Ribao prior to his visit to
China.
The exhibition opens up an excellent opportunity for Russia to tell
about modernization and innovative development of the Russian economy.
"The bulk of exposition of the Russian pavilion in Shanghai features
the achievements of pioneers of modernization, such as the Rosnano and
Rosatom corporations, other companies and also Russian regions," Medvedev
said.
The president invited all Chinese citizens to visit the Russian
pavilion at the World Expo-2010 fair.
"I am inviting all of you to visit the Russian pavilion and see the
Russian vision of the prospects and priorities of mankind's development,"
Medvedev said in his greeting published by the Shanghai-based Xinmin Wan
Bao newspaper on Tuesday.
President Medvedev said that Russian architects and designers
developed the motto of the fair's organizers, which is "Better City,
Better Life", and completed with a motto "Better city is the one in which
children are happy."
"We tried to look at an ideal city with the eyes of our children,
because children's inquisitiveness, energy and spontaneity are the mirror
of the boldest innovations and inventions," Medvedev went on to say.
President Medvedev described the exposition as an event of global
significance. "It had united more than 100 countries, which demonstrated
the most advanced achievements of innovative thought. EXPO-2010 has
become a vital event for China that confirmed the country's high authority
in the world. Russia attaches great importance to participation in
EXPO-2010," Medvedev went on to say.
The World EXPO-2010 fair in Shanghai opened in May and will run till
late October. More than 240 countries, territorial and international
organizations are taking part in its work. About 60 million people have
visited the exhibition since May. An absolute record was set last week:
more than 600,000 visitors in one day. About 100 million people are
expected to visit the EXPO-park's exhibition space in six months.
Shanghai is the last stop of President Medvedev's official visit to
China. He has already visited Beijing, Dalian (formerly Dalniy port) and
the Lushun district (formerly Port Arthur).
. Ukraine, Russia to sign agreement on inland navigation.
KIEV, September 28 (Itar-Tass) - The governments of Ukraine and Russia
will sign an agreement on inland navigation before the end of October.
"The ministries of the two countries have already reached this
agreement. The opening of Russian inland waterways for ships flying the
Ukrainian flag is a very important step for us," Konstantin Yefremov,
Ukraine's minister of transport and communication, said at a meeting of
port chiefs in Odessa, the Ministry's press service reported on Monday.
Preliminarily, the sides had agreed an inter-governmental draft
agreement on regulation of shipping in the Azov Sea and the Kerch Strait.
"These agreements should be regarded as the first step to re-opening
shipping on the rivers Dnepr, Desna and Pripyat, between the ports of
Ukraine, Russia and Belarus," said Sergei Krizhanovsky, the head of the
state administration of the sea and river transport.
. Ukrainian president & interior minister discuss local elections.
KIEV, September 28 (Itar-Tass) - Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich
and Interior Minister Anatoly Mogilev met on Monday to discuss how to make
the local elections scheduled for October 31 honest and transparent.
"These elections should be another step in establishing democracy in
Ukraine. That is why they should be free," the Ukrainian president said.
He added that any administrative pressure was inadmissible.
"Service in law enforcement bodies, service to the Law and protection
of law and order should be above politics," Yanukovich went on to say.
Ukraine's interior minister said, in turn, that the main task of the
law enforcers would be to protect laws and rights prior to the elections
and during the vote.
President Yanukovich also ordered Anatoly Mogilev to take the
investigation into the murder of an Israeli pilgrim under personal control.
The pilgrim was killed in Uman on September 26.
