KWP conference to elect supreme body of party.
28/9 Tass 72
PYONGYANG, September 28 (Itar-Tass) - The conference of the Korean
Workers' Party that opened in the North Korean capital on Tuesday, will
elect its supreme body.
Meetings of party committees of the Korean People's Army (KPA), of
cities, districts and provinces, which elected their candidates for the
party conference, were staged last August in the country. Each of them
took a resolution on electing the country's leader Kim Jong-Il a delegate
to the conference, which "expresses unanimous will" of all party members,
KPA servicemen and people, stress the local mass media.
The North Korean leaders planned initially to call the conference
early in September. Nothing was said about the reasons for its delay. One
of them could be the aftermath of natural calamities: inundations and a
typhoon, which swooped down on North Korea in August and early in
September. The previous party conference was held in North Korea 44 years
ago.
The last party congress was held in 1980, when it was necessary for
President Kim Il-Sung to call Kim Jong-Il as his heir in power. In this
connection, foreign analysts expect that changes in the leading structures
of the party will take place at the present conference.
It was made public short before the opening of the conference of new
appointments in the army. The youngest son Kim Jong-Un and the sister of
the present North Korean leader Kim Kyong Hui, were promoted to the rank
of general of the army. Kim Jong-Il signed an appropriate order as supreme
commander-in-chief on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the party to
be marked on October 10.
All in all, 39 people are recorded on the list of KPA officers, who
were promoted.
