CORAL TRIANGLE INITIATIVE SUMMIT TO BE HELD ON SIDELINES OF WOC 2009
Jakarta, July 30 (ANTARA) - The heads of government of countries grouped in the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) will hold a summit meeting on the sidelines of the World Ocean Conference which is scheduled to take place in Manado, North Sulawesi, May 11 to 15, 2009, an marine ministry official said.
Six heads of government would attend the CTI Summit, Gellwynn Jusuf, head of the marine and fisheries ministry's research body, said here on Tuesday.
"The CTI Summit will be part of the WOC and is expected to be attended by six heads of government from countries located in the coral triangle called 'sea Amazon'," Jusuf said.
The six heads of government would be from Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea (PNG), Solomon Islands, and Timor Leste.
The CTI Summit would launch a coral reef conservation and preservation program in the triangle zone, he said.
Partner countries such as Australia, the United States and a consortium of international NGOs would also attend the coral meeting.
A number of advanced countries such as Australia and the United States have provided a great deal of financial aid for preservation of coral reefs because coral reefs could absorb carbon emissions.
"Financial assistance amounting to US$200 million has been received from several countries including Australia and the United States for CTI, not for WOC implementation. Advanced countries have great interests in the conservation of coral reefs, therefore they are willing to give millions of dollars," he said.
The Coral Triangle or 'Sea Amazon' covers 75,000 km2 and has around 500 species of corals which have become habitats for more than 3,000 fish species.
The area is food sources for 120 million people and a regional economic source generating around US$2.3 billion per year.
