SEOUL, September 27 (Itar-Tass) -- Chief of the General Staff of the
Russian Armed Forces General of the Army Nikolai Makarov, who is staying
in South Korea on a visit, held talks with Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of
Staff of the South Korean Armed Forces General Han Min-Gu. During the
talks, the sides focussed on ways of further development of the two
countries' military cooperation, a statement of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
(JCS) notes.
The military commanders of the two countries discussed possibilities
of expanding exchanges of servicemen, as well as squadrons of naval ships
and aircraft. They also exchanged opinions regarding conditions of
ensuring security around the Korean Peninsula and in the region of
North-Eastern Asia.
During the three-day visit, Nikolai Makarov plans to meet with South
Korean Defence Minister Kim Tae-Young.
"On the threshold of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of
diplomatic relations between the two countries, Nikolai Makarov's visit is
expected to promote the development of friendly relations between the
armed forces of Russia and the Republic of Korea and bring them to the
level of strategic partnership," the JCS statement stresses.
The diplomatic relations between Moscow and Seoul were established on
September 30, 1990.
