Medvedev honours memory of Port-Artur defenders.
LUSHUN, September 26 (Itar-Tass) - President Dmitry Medvedev honoured
the memory of Port-Artur defenders. The Russian head of state started his
official trip to China with a visit to the Russian Military Cemetery in
the area of Lushun (former Port-Artur) in the city of Dalian and laid down
flowers at the memorial and the monument to Soviet troops.
The Russian Military Cemetery in Lushun is a large burial place of
foreigners in China. Lying at rest here are over 20,000 men and officers
of the Russian Army, fallen in the line of duty in 1848-1904 and during
the 1904-1905 Russian-Japanese war. Following 1945, Soviet men and
officers, who died during the temporary stay of units of the Soviet Army
in the Liaodong Peninsula, were buried next to the old Russian cemetery.
According to Chinese data, these are 2,030 people; out of the total, 630
relatives of the servicemen.
Later, Soviet servicemen, who died in the 1950-1953 Korean War
(several hundred people), were buried here as well .
