Foreign mercenary eliminated in Tajikistan.
DUSHANBE, September 26 (Itar-Tass) - A foreign mercenary who took part
in the attack on a government truck convoy on September 19 has been
eliminated in the Eastern Rashta region of Tajikistan, the Tajik national
television reported on Saturday.
The truck convoy came under fire near the impassable Kamarob gorge
(260 kilometers away from Dushanbe). Twenty-five soldiers and officers
were killed, three more later died of wounds and more than ten are still
staying in hospital. Schemes for holding future terrorist acts,
instructions for the production of explosives and a submachine-gun were
found with the dead militant whose nationality is kept secret. An
operation to neutralize illegal armed groups continues in Tajikistan. Some
of the militants have been destroyed; some have been taken prisoner, while
the chieftain and his associates have managed to escape in the mountains.
The Tajik security services have accused groups of the former field
commanders Mirzokhudzhu Akhmadov, Abdullo Rakhimov and Alovudin Davlatov
of attacking the truck convoy.
According to the Tajik Defence Ministry's press service, foreign
mercenaries from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Chechnya are members of the
armed groups.
.S Ossetia sends 2nd shipment of relief aid to fire victims in Russia.
TSKHINVAL, September 26 (Itar-Tass) - South Ossetia has sent a second
relief convoy to Nizhny Novgorod region that was hit by wildfires this
summer.
The South Ossetian president's adviser for social issues Nugar
Gabarayev said that the action to send humanitarian aid to the fire
victims was being carried out by decision of President Kokoity.
"Today, as the previous time, we are dispatching essentials to the
people of the Vyksunsky district of the Nizhny Novgorod region who were
hit by fires. The relief cargo includes clothes, linen, tableware, beds,
tables and wardrobes," Gabarayev went on to say.
He added that the range of items included in the relief cargo had been
agreed with the authorities of the Nizhny Novgorod region and will fully
meet the needs of the fire victims.
South Ossetia sent the first shipment of relief aid to the Nizhny
Novgorod region on August 26, the day when Russia recognized the republic'
s independence.
. About 450 people gathered for anti-corruption rally in Moscow.
MOSCOW, September 26 (Itar-Tass) - About 450 people took part in an
anti-corruption rally in the centre of Moscow on Saturday.
Viktor Biryukov, the head of the information service of the Moscow
Internal Affairs department, told Itar-Tass that the rally had been held
from 15:00 until 18:00 on Bolotnaya Square. Its participants protested
against corruption in state power bodies and demanded the restoration of
direct elections of the Moscow mayor.
"The action passed without any incidents or serious violations of law
and order," Biryukov said.
. Ukrainian PM says there's no threat to Ukraine's food security.
KHARKOV, Ukraine, September 26 (Itar-Tass) - Ukrainian Prime Minister
Nikolai Azarov who is on a visit to the Kharkov region said on Saturday
that there was no threat to Ukraine's food security.
"We have sufficient stocks of grain," he said and added that the
government was doing everything it could to stabilize the situation
despite unfavourable weather conditions, bad harvest and an increase of
prices for food wheat.
"The State Reserve and the Agrarian Fund are creating food reserves.
They are making purchases that will help us stabilizing the situation in
the autumn-winter season and in spring," Azarov emphasized. He also said
that he didn't expect any food grain deficit because the government had
planned to stock 3.5 million tons.
"We are planning to purchase more than 2.5 million tons of grain. In
the meantime, regional funds will also create reserves worth about one
million tons. Therefore, there will be no deficit," Azarov said.
Azarov said that the Ukrainian government regarded the agrarian sector
as a priority and would soon provide peasants with incentives.
. Gas container explosion hurts nine road workers.
ST.PETERSBURG, September 26 (Itar-Tass) - Nine road workers have been
hurt in a gas container explosion in St. Petersburg.
The Russian Interior Ministry department for St. Petersburg reports
that the 50-litre gas cylinder exploded at around 21:00 Moscow time. As a
result, nine people received traumas and burns of various degree.
Ambulance teams and Emergencies Ministry employees are working at the
blast site.
