Thai, Cambodian PMs to meet in New York for bilateral talks

NEW YORK, Sept 23 - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen are scheduled to meet for bilateral talks after participating in the US-ASEAN Business Council on Thursday.

Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya was optimistic that the discussion between the leaders over the ongoing border dispute would be smoother since former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra would no longer interfere in the issue.

He said tensions between the two leaders have eased after they have met several times at international fora.

The Thai foreign minister accompanying Mr Abhisit to New York said he met with Kurt Campbell, US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, to review Thai-US relations.

The US has expressed concern over the state of Thai-Cambodian relations and wants the two countries to find a solution via negotiations.

On Indochinese and Myanmar refugees in Thailand, Mr Kasit said the US expressed its willingness to allocate funds to deal with problems of Hmong and Burmese refugees in Thailand.

Proposed cooperations to solve these problems included training and educating the refugees before repatriating them to their home countries.

Regarding the case of suspected Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, Mr Kasit said the US was satisfied with Thailand's court ruling.

The Appeals Court ruled last month that charges against Mr Bout were determined as being criminal rather than political and he should be extradited and handed over to US authorities within three months.

Mr Bout was subsequently indicted in the US on four terrorism-related charges including conspiring to sell millions of dollars worth of weapons to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia. (MCOT online news)
