Vietnamese delegation attended an international forum on women held in Shanghai

Hanoi (VNA) – A Vietnamese delegation headed by Nguyen Thi Hoa, Chairwoman of
the Vietnamese Women’s Union (VWU) attended an international forum on women held
in Shanghai , China from September 16-18.

The forum, themed “Women in urban development and the 15th anniversary of the
fourth World Summit on women”, saw the participation of nearly 300 delegates
from governments, parliaments, organisations and enterprises from 50 countries and
territories worldwide as well as the United Nations, regional and international
women’s organisations.

Addressing the ministerial-level meeting, Chairman Hoa highlighted the commitment
and great endeavours made by the Vietnamese government as well as achievements the
country has recorded to promote women’s progress and gender equality.

Over the past 15 years, the process of urbanisation in many countries has brought
about opportunities for citizens in general and women in particular to benefit
from economic development and social progress and civilisation.

However, urbanisation has also posed a number of challenges to women, especially
those with unstable working and living conditions and those with inefficient
social welfare services.

The proportion of female leaders does not match their capacity and contributions
and the gender inequality has been shown in job assignment, preconception about
gender and the incomprehensive evaluation of women’s capacity.

The forum adopted a joint commitment to further promote the programme of action
for gender equality in an effort to fulfill the targets set in the Beijing
Declaration and Platform for Action, the Committee on Elimination of
Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and the Millennium Development Goals.-Enditem
