US SENATE FOREIGN RELATIONS COMMITTEE OKS MATTHEW BRYZA`S NOMINATION TO DERAIL ARMENIAN LOBBY`S EFFORTS IN US SENATE

Washington, September 22 (AzerTAc). Senators on the Committee on Foreign Relations voted 17-to-2 on September 21 to approve Matthew Bryza as the top U.S. diplomat in Baku, a position that has been vacant for more than a year. His nomination must now be confirmed by the U.S. Senate, which usually approves the majority of nominations that have cleared the committee.
Senator Barbara Boxer, a Democrat from California and her fellow Democratic senator from New Jersey, Robert Menendez made statements expressing their willingness to vote against the diplomat`s nomination.
“Mr. Bryza has demonstrated a pattern of unwillingness to speak out forcefully in the face of continued Azerbaijani aggression toward Nagorno-Karabakh," Boxer, who represents California, the U.S. state with the largest Armenian-American constituency, told the committee.
Senator Menendez noted that he had “serious reservations about the U.S. ambassador nominee to Azerbaijan,” citing Bryza’s inaction in the face of Azerbaijan’s desecration of the Djulfa cemetery and opposition to Armenian Genocide affirmation; and, “very close personal ties to Turkey and Azerbaijan, and therefore about his ability to act as an unbiased representative of the United States in Azerbaijan”
Neither Boxer nor Menendes spoke about how Bryza must promote US interests.
Before the voting the panel chairman John Kerry supported Bryza`s nomination. He praised his experience saying his connections would help him do his duties by creating a useful network. John Kerry called on the Department of State and Bryza to be careful to the criticism as his diplomatic mission will be under scrutiny.
However, Ms. Boxer may put a hold on him to stop confirmation by unanimous consent. The Wall Street Journal claims Senator Boxer is in danger of losing her seat to Republican challenger Carly Fiorina. The Golden State is home to a large Armenian community, and Ms. Boxer is pandering for their votes.
