Public transport advisable on Moscow Day without Autos.

MOSCOW, September 22 (Itar-Tass) - On the Day without Autos on
Wednesday, ecologists and city authorities advise city folk to leave their
cars at home and use public transport, bikes, roller skates or get to work
on foot.
The international action, originated in 1998, is being undertaken in
Moscow for a third time. According to a public opinion poll, 28 percent of
Moscow motorists, or six percent more than last year, are ready to join in
the action. The opinion poll was taken among 1,800 motorists.
The office cars of many officials and politicians are sure to stay in
their garages this Wednesday. Some members of the State Duma lower house
of the Russian parliament intend to do without cars. In particular, Sergei
Shishkaryov, chairman of the committee on transport and a member of the
United Russia party, and Yabloko leader Sergei Mitrokhin decided to get to
office by bicycle.
Vladimir Zhirinovsky, Deputy Speaker of the State Duma and leader of
the Liberal Democratic Party, will support the action by travelling by
metro. He intends to use travel time with benefit: he will converse with
passengers and discuss problems connected with city transport traffic.
First Deputy Mayor Yuri Roslyak also intends to get to work and return
home in the evening by metro. Another First Deputy Mayor Pyotr Biryukov is
just to walk to the city council at 13, Tverskaya Ulitsa. Several other
vice-mayors, prefects, as well as staff members of a number of departments
are also to leave cars at home.
Wednesday's public transport ticket will cost 12 roubles instead of
the usual 24. These tickets will be valid only for one day. For
passengers' convenience, hundreds of additional buses, trolley-buses, and
trams will be in service.
