Ahmadinejad: We are not against Jews but against Zionists

New York, Sept 22, IRNA – President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said he is not against the Jews but he is against the Zionists who kill the innocent people of Palestine.

Speaking to a group of managers and chief-editors of US media in New York on Tuesday, the president, answering a question about peace talks between Israel and Palestinians, said certain people cannot decide for Palestinians.

“Whenever, the people of Palestine in a referendum decide on something or their representatives in negotiations reach an agreement, we feel committed to support the decision.”

The president said Iran supports peace and negotiation but basic issues such as the rights of Palestinian refugees and Palestinian right of self-determination should be taken into consideration.

A reporter asked the president why he has spoken about Cyrus the Great, in reply President Ahmadinejad said, ”History is always part of a nation’s identity. You cannot omit history. Obviously, we do not live in the past. Cyrus is important because he is part of our nation and an honor for the whole humanity.”

Regarding the country's economic situation, President Ahmadinejad said, “Iran’s economy is flourishing. Industry is on the verge of a big jump. Agriculture has a steady growth and is developing with Iranian know-how. Stock market in Iran is one of the most active markets in the world. I believe that Iran will be one of the 12 biggest economies in the world within 5 years.”

On political freedom in Iran the president said there is complete freedom in Iran and the government is criticized in the harshest way.

Elaborating on Iran-US relations, the president said he hoped that American statesmen take basic measures to improve relations and know that the problem cannot be solved with pressure and issuing (UN) resolutions.

Concerning sanctions, President Ahmadinejad said Iran has been under sanctions for 30 years. Our exchanges with Europe is about 23 billion dollars which makes no problem if it is removed from Iran’s economy.

Regarding the issue of imprisonment of political prisoners, the president said that in Iran nobody is imprisoned unless there is an order by a judge.

As for the issue of the Tehran Research Reactor, the president said the reactor provides more that 800,000 patients with medicine. Iran wrote a letter to the IAEA and asked for the reactor’s fuel but the western countries politicized the issue and did not give us the fuel. So, we were forced to produce the fuel inside Iran.

Noting that Iran’s first atomic power plant is being operational, President Ahmadinejad said the plant will produce 1,000 megawatts of electricity and we are planning to produce 4,000 megawatts of Atomic electricity in the future.

A reporter asked the president if he is not worried on US sale of sophisticated arms to Saudi Arabia.

President Ahmadinejad said he was not worried and he knew that Arabs had to purchase these arms to help the US ailing economy but ‘ those who sell these arms should know that new people may possess them with a political turning’./end
