Georgian Pres says deeply concerned by environment in Abkhazia

UNITED NATIONS, September 21 (Itar-Tass) - Georgia's President Mikhail
Saakashvili has told the UN summit on the Millennium Development Goals he
is deeply concerned by the condition of environment in Abkhazia, a former
region of Georgia that gained independence in 2008.
As he took the floor at the summit Monday, he said the Georgian
authorities are profoundly concerned by the impact the alleged production
of resources for Olympic construction sites in the Russian resort city of
Sochi exerts on the environment in Abkhazia.
Saakashvili said in this connection that he has asked Georgia's
"partners" to help closely watch the situation.
He did not specify the natural resources, the production of which he
had in mind.
Saakashvili claimed the Georgian government does not control about 20%
of the country's territory, adding that the territories beyond this
control are "black holes".
Their existence makes the achievement of millennium development goals
in Georgia impossible, he said.
In this connection, he asked the summit to assist Georgia in
implementing the proposals on the development strategy as regards the
occupied territories and the restoration of Georgia's unity.
