PRESIDENT TO OPEN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF ISLAMIC SCHOLARS

Jakarta, July 30 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to officially open the third International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) here on Wednesday.

The President will also deliver his keynote speech in the conference being organized by Indonesia's largest Muslim organization Nahdatul Ulama (NU), from July 30 to August 1, 2008.

The conference would discuss conflicts arising in Muslim-populated countries, such as in Palestine, Sudan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and try to find solutions of the problems, NU Chairman Hasyim Muzadi said at the Presidential office on Tuesday.

"The discussions will involve observers, scholars and government representatives," he said.

The 3rd ICIS is being attended by 300 participants, including around 200 foreign participants from 66 countries such as Iran, Syria, Egypt, Palestine, Iraq, Lebanon, Somali, the Netherlands, France, the United States, Malaysia, and Australia.
