Hinch diagnosed with cancer

Melbourne radio personality Derryn Hinch has been diagnosed with liver cancer which
requires major surgery.
The 66-year-old announced he would temporarily step down from 3AW's drive-time radio
show to fight the disease.
He has vowed to beat the illness and says he is not depressed or feeling sorry for
himself.
"I not only intend to deal with it. I intend to beat it," he told listeners on Monday.
"I know everybody says that. But I truly believe that this is not the end, it's the
beginning of something."
Hinch will undergo surgery to have a third of his liver removed as part of a
resection operation.
Doctors have warned Hinch that 60 per cent of people who have the procedure are
given a life expectancy of five years.
The former reporter and TV host said he would treat the illness as a "project" and
promised to campaign to make more Australians become organ donors and raise
awareness for alcohol abuse.
"My own excessive boozing may not have caused this cancer but it caused the
cirrhosis which may scuttle my recovery," he said.
The man known as the `human headline' has enjoyed a long media career and been
married four times, including twice to Australian actress Jacki Weaver.
