Oakeshott won't seek Speaker's job

Independent Rob Oakeshott has all but pulled out of the race for Speaker.
The Member for Lyne said he would be reluctant to accept the role because of
confusion over a deal on federal parliamentary reform.
In a statement on Monday Mr Oakeshott cited confusion over constitutional concerns
and practical arrangements around establishing an independent speaker as reasons for
his decision.
"By coincidence or design, concerns have been raised constitutional, practical,
political, or a combination of all three regarding this agreement," he said.
"In light of this confusion about the honouring of the agreement, I would be very
reluctant to accept any nomination for Speaker."
Mr Oakeshott, who was key in delivering Labor a minority government, last week said
he would be willing to accept the role so long as he could retain his voting rights.
Labor had supported Mr Oakeshott's push for the job, but said it would seek legal
advice.
The coalition, however, maintains the Speaker should only be able to vote on
legislation in the event of a tie, and had wanted Labor's Harry Jenkins to remain in
the position.
Mr Oakeshott said that in view of his decision, he had asked Opposition Leader Tony
Abbott to consider allowing the Speaker to be drawn from coalition ranks.
"Mr Abbott has agreed to come back within 24 hours on the issue of a Liberal Party
MP in the Speaker's Chair, something I would strongly consider endorsing as a step
towards the Westminster model of a truly independent Speaker," he said.
