PARTICIPANTS OF ISLAMIC INT'L CONFERENCE ARRIVE IN JAKARTA
Jakarta, July 29 (ANTARA) - Several Islamic scholars arrived here Tuesday to attend the ICIS (International Conference of Islamic Scholars)III meeting to be held from July 29 - August 1, 2008 at Borobudur Hotel in Jakarta, it was reported here Tuesday.
They were expected to register themselves with the organizing committee from 01.00 - 07.00 PM.
Since the registration opened, about 67 delegates had registered themselves to the organizing committee. Delegates from Iran were the first to register on Monday night, and then followed by delegates from Iraq and Oman.
Among delegations who had arrived are Ayatullah Ali Tashkhiri (Iranian Olema), Mahir Mizhar, Syekh Ahmad Zein, Syekh Kholil Dabagh, and Dr. Ali Da'musy (Lebanon), and Raed Fahmi Jahed (Iraqi Minister of Technology and Science) said Saiful Bahri Anshori, Vice Chief of organizing committee.
Vice secretary general of Nahdlatul Ulama(NU) Syaiful Bahri Ansori who is the chief of the organizing committee confirmed that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was unable to be present on the occasion, but he has sent his delegates, and Sultan Hasanah Albolkiah, the king of Brunei also could not attend the conference due to his birthday which is celebrated by the public for a whole month.
UN Secretary GeneralBan Ki-moon is also unable to attend the meeting and will be sending his delegate to read his speech on the occasion.
Other famous figures such as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Malaysia's Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi have also confirmed their absence and would send their representatives to the meeting.
This biennual meeting is held by the largest Moslem community in Indonesia, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) with slogan Upholding Islam as blessings to the world (Rahmatan Lil alamin).
"The slogan is used to reflect the event's mission of gathering Islamic scholars around the world to discuss and match their perception toward conflicts on Islamic countries and recommending resolutions to it," said KH Hasyim Muzadi, Chairman of the central executive board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) recently.
The third ICIS is a continuation of the ICIS II held in June 2006, and the ICIS I in February 2004. the ICIS II declared 37 action plans on their recommendations for the United Nation (UN), the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Islamic countries, and leaders of Islamic organizations.
Among the 37 plans were four important notifications including Islamic scholars' conception about Globalization paradox, international conflicts, economical endeavor, and education.
Meanwhile, the first ICIS conference had reached an agreement to declare that Palestine and Iraq must have better situation and that every participating country must helped picture a better Islam to the world.
The first meeting also came up with participants' determination to exchange their expertise, literary books, and students. This agreement aimed to broaden the Islamic scholars' horizon globally and to create movements to ease tensions between Islam and west world especially after the 9/11 tragedy.
The ICIS which was established by PBNU also has been a member of the UN since September 21, 2006, which had made it (the ICIS) available to attend every UN's meeting.
All participants of the conference were scheduled to have a welcome dinner with Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla at 7.00 p.m in the Vice-Presidential Palace, Jakarta, on Tuesday.
