20/9 Tass 60
VLADIVOSTOK, September 13 (Itar-Tass) -- An international symposium on
the development of North-Eastern Asia by primitive man opened in
Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk on Monday. Specialists from of Russia, Japan, Korea,
China, Poland and the United States take part in the forum. Explorers of
the Old Stone Age will analyze the state of modern knowledge on the
settlement of people in the Lower Paleolithic period (230,000-140,000
years ago) and the Later Paleolithic period (30,000-13,000 years ago).
The Sakhalin State University (SSU), the Krasnoyarsk State Pedagogical
University, the Asian Paleolithic Association and the Culture Agency of
the Sakhalin Region are the organizers of the symposium, the SSU press
service reported. Sakhalin was chosen as the venue of the symposium in
connection with the fact that during the last ten years unique
archaeological objects were discovered and studied in the island.
The symposium will last until September 25. During the forum,
scientists from six countries will visit excavations of ancient
settlements. Russian scientists will tell their colleagues how thousands
of years ago Sakhalin was populated. Scientists from other countries will
tell about the appearance of prehistoric people on their territories.
