Iran's President holds talks with UN Secretary-General

New York, Sept 20, IRNA -- President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in New York on Sunday held talks with United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on major international issues.

The president outlined views of the Islamic Republic of Iran about administration of the international community by the United Nations and practical partnership of the member states.

IRNA reporter in New York said that President Ahmadinejad will attend the inaugural ceremony of the Third Millennium Summit of Leaders and will address the Summit.

Some 190 leaders are expected to present statements to the Millennium Summit.

In their 15-minute statements, the leaders will put forward practical measures to help achieve the eight-point Millennium Development Goals and deal with the obstacles in the way of implementing the blueprints for the Millennium development goals.

The eight-point Millennium Development Goals was adopted with consensus by the UN member states in 2000.

The Millennium Development Goals was envisaged to be implemented by 2015, but, the plan is lagging behind the schedule and the situation in the international community got worse than what it was in 2000.

Eradicating poverty, international partnership for development, fighting AIDS, Malaria and pandemic diseases, Sustainable Protection of Environment, gender equality, empowerment of women, decreasing infantile and maternal mortality, improvement of maternal status, and guaranteeing elementary education are the eight-point action plan of the Millennium Development Goals.

Eradicating poverty is major part of the Millennium Development Goals. Poverty was not removed in the past 10 years, instead, the economic crisis in the past two years has brought millions of newcomers to the corps of the poor.

Views of the leaders attending the Millennium Summit will help adopt effective measures to attain the Millennium Development Goals./end
