Ahmadinejad: Sanctions have no effect on Iran

Tehran, Sept. 18, IRNA, -- President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said here on Friday night that he is not worried about economic sanctions adding that Iran’s economic position will rise in spite of sanctions.
President Ahmadinejad was speaking on Iranian News TV Channel before flying to New York to attend United Nations General Assembly annual meeting.
“US government has not had economic relations with Iran for 31 years. Now, they are trying to make other countries stop their economic cooperation with Iran,” the president said.
“Financial turnover in Iran is about 800 to 900 billion dollars. Europe has just about 23 billion dollars of exchanges with us. Only a small amount of Iran’s financial turnover is with the West,” said President Ahmadinejad.
“We have two good opportunities; first, we can produce inside Iran; second, we can replace new countries in our economic exchanges.
"Investment in the oil and gas sectors has been multiplied and we can produce 70 percent of our needs ourselves and with taking just one more step, we can become self sufficient in this field completely.
"Sanctions will not do any harm to our economy and the west aims to launch a psychological war against us in order to create problems for us.”
President Ahmadinejad said sanctions will not affect Iran’s nuclear program either. “We are always ready for negotiations, but this should be done in the frameworks of international laws,” he said.
On his plans in New York, the president said he would convey the message of Islam and Iran to the world public opinion.
Referring to the recent unveiling of Cyprus Cylinder in Tehran, President Ahmadinejad praised the wisdom and justice of the Iranian ancient king and said his message to the people of Babylon was a message of compassion and justice.
Reading parts of script on the Cyrus Cylinder, the president said he would convey the lofty ideas of the Islamic and Iranian civilizations at the United Nations.
“The world has witnessed the failed American management and is now awaiting to see what Iranian management is. We will tell them this Cylinder and lofty Islamic values are part of Iranian management,” the president said.
Asked about his visits to Syria and Algeria before flying to New York, the president said Iran has excellent relations with both countries and we have regular discussions with our friends.
On the freedom of the American citizen Sarah Shourd, the president said Iranian culture has a great respect for women; therefore, the American woman was freed.
He appreciated the efforts of Sultan Qaboos of Oman as an intermediary and said a list of Iranian citizens who are unjustifiably imprisoned in the US has been given to the government of Oman to be submitted to Washington for consideration.
“We do not expect anything in return of Shourd’s release, but naturally and ethically, the US government should take some steps and free some Iranians who have been imprisoned in the US,” he said./end
