INDONESIA'S ECONOMIC GROWTH ENCOURAGING : MINISTER

Banda Aceh, July 29 (ANTARA) - Indonesia's economy over the past four years generally grew in an encouraging way, namely at an average of six percent per year, Information Minister Muhammad Nuh said.

"Besides, the unemployment rate has also been reduced from 9.9 percent in 2004 to 8.5 percent in 2008. likewise, the poverty rate was cut down from 16.7 percent to 15.4 percent," the minister said here on Tuesday.

The minister spoke about figures usually made public by the government of President Susil Bambang Yudhoyono over the last four years.

"What is interesting to observe each time the government is delivering its financial notes is the figures pertaining to, among others, poverty, unemployment and economic growth," he said.

He said that the other interesting thing was data issued by the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)in 2008 which indicated Indonesia's improved business climate as all means and infrastructures had relatively been handled well, including the transportation sector.

"All sectors have been undergoing proper improvement and now they are relatively good and so is the case of the economic stability," the minister added.

He said that state revenues increased from Rp400 trillion in 2004 to Rp1,200 trillion in 2008. This was proof of the fact that the state business was also running well so that external debts were cut by about 60 percent, including the debts to the IMF which had been paid up in 2005.
