PRESIDENT OFFERS CONDOLENCES TO SJAHRIR'S BEREAVED FAMILY
Jakarta, July 28 (ANTARA)- President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and the First Lady Madame Ani Yudhoyono on Monday night made a condolence visit to deceased Dr. Sjahrir who was laid in state in his house in Jl. Sukabumi, Menteng, Central Jakarta.
The president arrived at the house at 10.30 p.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB). Dr Syahrir, an economic adviser in the Presidential Advisory Council (Wantimpres), passed away in Singapore on Monday.
Several ministers and high ranking figures who accompanied the head of state were Minister/State Secretary Hatta Radjasa, Cabinet Secretary Sudi Silalahi, Environment Minister Rahmat Witoelar, former foreign minister Ali Alatas and Central Bank (BI) governor Boediono.
On the occasion, the president prayed and expressed his deepest condolences to the family of Dr Syahrir.
Born in Kudus, Central Java, on 24 February 1945, Sjahrir passed away at Mount Elizabet Hospital in Singapore at 8 on Monday morning after undergoing treatment for lung cancer for a certain period of time.
The head of state said Syahrir, a senior economist who was critical in expressing his ideas and problems just the way they were.
During his lifetime, Syahrir had written a number of books such as "Political Economics, an Essential Need of a Prospective Analysis" (1986), "Basic Needs in Indonesia: Economic, Political and Public Policiess" (1986), "The Nation's Balance" (1995), "Economic Crisis Towards Total Reforma" (1999), and "Transition Towards a New Indonesia" (2004).
Sjahrir's body will be buried at Tanah Kusir public cemetry on Tuesday morning.
Sjahrir was survived by his wife Kartini and two children.
