Kyrgyzstan not to insist on Bakiyev extradition.

14/9 Tass 197

BISHKEK, September 14 (Itar-Tass) -- The authorities of Kyrgyzstan are
not going to forward more inquiries to Minsk, asking for the extradition
of ex-President Kurmanbek Bakiyev of Kyrgyzstan, who was overthrown and
left for Belarus in April, this year, Kyrgyz Deputy Prime Minister Azimbek
Beknazarov, who is in charge of the judicial system, the police, the army
and the security services, said here on Tuesday.
"We shall not forward more inquiries, because the criminal case on the
developments of April 7 is being referred to court," he said. On April 7
the men of the National Guard Service, who were guarding the government
building at the central square of Bishkek, and of the National Security
Service of Kyrgyzstan opened fire for effect at participants in a rally of
opposition supporters, killing 86 people.
"At present 29 people are defendants on the April 7 case, including
Zhanysh Bakiyev, the brother of the ex-president, who headed the National
Guard Service, ex-Prime Minister Daniyar Usenov and Oksana Malevannaya,
former head of the secretariat of Kurmanbek Bakiyev. They will be tried in
accordance with the law," said Beknazarov. He assured that those of the
defendants, who found refuge abroad, "will be accused in absentia."
Belarus twice refused to comply with the request of the
prosecutor-general's office of Kyrgyzstan and to extradite Kurmanbek
Bakiyev.
