ONE BILLION BARREL OIL TRANSPORTED VIA BTC PIPELINE

Baku, September 14 (AzerTAc). The billionth barrel of oil was pumped into the pipeline at Azerbaijan`s Sangachal terminal in early September, according to the operator of the BTC pipeline, BP Azerbaijan. The billionth barrel reached Turkey`s Mediterranean port of Ceyhan a few days ago and was loaded onto the Nippon Princess tanker.
The tanker, the 1,275th to lift Caspian oil from Ceyhan, set sail for Rotterdam yesterday.
The president of BP Azerbaijan, Rashid Javanshir, called the event as “historic”.
He said since we began to fill the pipeline with oil in 2005, BTC has met all expectations - it is safe, rational and reliable.
He described the BTC an enormous technical achievement.
“The pipeline is an example for other areas in the export sector and is also an example of environmental protection and social responsibility”, Rashid Javanshir noted.
He also added the pipeline had the environmental benefit of reducing the number of tankers passing through the congested Bosporus.
Rashid Javanshir said “some 730,000 people in 550 communities along the the pipeline have benefited from BTC”. “This is thanks to the creation of many jobs, investment of millions of dollars in long-term projects and the economic development opportunities created”, he added.
The daily throughput capacity of BTC is now 1.2 million barrels, but daily exports average 850,000. The highest daily export was recorded on 21 July this year, 1.06 million barrels.
