India, Afghanistan J.W.G. meet
New Delhi, July 29 (PTI) - A joint working group of India and Afghanistan Monday held a meeting to work out the modalities for development of local bodies in the strife-torncountry with New Delhi's cooperation.
The J.W.G. headed by Afghanistan's Deputy Minister for Rural Rehabilitation and Development Asif Rahimi discussed the areas of mutual cooperation with Indian officials and NGOs in accordance with an MoU signed between the two countriesearlier.
An official in the Ministry of Panchayati Raj informed that eight members from the Afghan side and almost an equal number of officers and NGO representatives from Indian sideparticipated in the JWG meeting.
The meeting also discussed the constitution of Joint Forum on Local Government, which is likely to shape up byOctober this year.
"Impressed with the success of local bodies in our country, Afghanistan would like to adopt the Indian model of self governance in their country with necessary modifications required there. They are exploring how the Indian agencies canhelp them in this venture," said the official.
JWG members will also hold an interactive session with India's Minister for Panchayati Raj Manishankar Aiyar Tuesdayon the same subject.
Earlier a delegation of the Afghan Government led by its minister Jelani Popal met Aiyar on July 23 and expressed hiswillingness to learn from the Indian experience.
