365 schools in Narathiwat resume classes after 3-day closure
NARATHIWAT, Sept 13 – Reopened after a temporary closure since last Wednesday, 365 schools in insurgent security-risk ‘red zones’ in the southern province of Narathiwat resumed classes Monday morning amid tight security after last week's killings on two teachers.
Schools in 13 districts in strife-torn Narathiwat were closed for safety reasons last Wednesday.
Security forces provided extra personnel to escorting teachers going to their schools, aiming to restore teachers’ confidence and give them encouragement.
Meanwhile, teachers and students also commemorated Wilas Kongkham, 54, a teacher at Baan Mananggayi School, and his wife, Komkam Petchprom, 53, a teacher at Tungtohdang School, who were shot dead by presumed insurgents on the morning of September 7.
In the neighbouring province of Pattani, police and military personnel patrolled and provided security on roads to schools in high-risk zones. They also provided additional forces patrolling around the area on an hourly basis.
Police Chief Pol Gen Wichean Potephosree, who is now visiting Yala province, said arrest warrants have been issued for two suspects and warrants under the emergency decree for five persons related to the killings of the two teachers in Narathiwat last Tuesday.
Police investigators collected nine spent cartridge cases from an M-16 rifle. They were later found to be the same type of bullets used in other attacks and were fired from the same rifle used in previous attacks on September 29, 2009 in Rangae and on September 1 this year in Tanyongmat sub-district of Narathiwat.
Gen Wichean visited the troubled southern provinces beginning with Narathiwat Sunday afternoon, his first visit since taking the top police job this month.
He is now visiting Yala to follow up the situation and to provide strategy and guidelines for policy implementation to police and to boost the morale of his subordinates. (MCOT online news)
