PM expresses concern over anti-government movements this week

BANGKOK, Sept 12 - The Thai government is concerned about the planned activities of the anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) who are going to stage events this week commemorating the fourth anniversary of a bloodless coup which toppled the government of prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Sunday.

Speaking during his weekly TV and radio address, Mr Abhisit said he is concerned about the planned UDD movements this week.

His government will not obstruct their activities, provided that they are carried out under the constitution, the prime minister said.

“But their political activities in the past showed that they are always connected with violence or sabotage,” Mr Abhisit said.

“What I want to stress is that clear-cut rules must be laid out, starting from coordination [between security agencies and the UDD] about what they want to do,” Mr Abhisit said. “This is to prevent those who may use violence from joining the events.”

UDD members loyal to fugitive and ousted ex-premier Thaksin, who was ousted from power on September 19, 2006, plan to challenge the emergency decree now in effect in the capital by placing flowers in front of prisons nationwide and at Metropolitan Police headquarters on Friday.

On Saturday, the day before the anniversary, the UDD activists plan to travel from Bangkok’s Imperial World department store to Chiang Mai in a motorcade of 50 rally cars. On Sunday the 19th, activities will be held at Ratchaprasong Intersection to mark the fourth anniversary of the 2006 coup. (MCOT online news)
