PYONGYANG, September 11 (Itar-Tass) -- The DPRK Red Cross Society with
the assistance of the UN Fund on rendering urgent aid is engaged in
liquidating the effects of a flood in the North Korean city of Sinuiju, a
press release of the International Red Cross Federation which the
ITAR-TASS office in Pyongyang received.
The document says that according to the state of affairs at September
6, over one million litres of fresh water were distributed in this region
which borders on China.
Some 350 workers of the DPRK Red Cross Society helped the local
authorities evacuate residents and render first aid to those who suffered
in the flood.
Units of the Korean People's Army, which evacuated by helicopters and
naval ships more than 5,000 people to safe regions, took part in rescue
operations.
The flood caused by torrential rains in August inflicted considerable
damage on North Korea's north-western regions. As a result of the
calamity, over 7,000 houses, where about 7,500 families were living, as
well as some 300 public buildings were partially or completely flooded.
About 7,200 hectares of farm lands were also flooded.
The press release notes that the operation on the sidelines of the Red
Cross to render aid to the population in the flood-hit regions of the DPRK
is to be completed in February 2011.
