North Koreans pay homage to Kim Il-Sung on occasion of anniversary.
PYONGYANG, September 9 (Itar-Tass) - Numerous bouquets of flowers were
laid down on Thursday all over the country at monuments to Kim Il-Sung on
the occasion of the national holiday - the 62nd anniversary of the country'
s foundation.
The main place of homage in Pyongyang was the 20-metre statue of the
country's founder on Mansu Hill and the Kumsusan memorial complex, where
the body of the Korean leader lies in rest in a crystal sarcophagus.
The city streets are decked with streamers, calling on people and the
army "to unite more behind the Korean Workers' Party", "to launch a
general offensive so as to develop the economy and to raise the well-being
of the country's population".
The best artistic groups of the country show concert programmes on the
holiday's occasion.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il along with the military was present at
a concert of the State Merited Chorus. The Central Telegraph Agency of
Korea (CTAK) reported on Thursday that the actors of the well-known
company rendered popular patriotic songs.
General Secretary of the Korean Workers' Party, chairman of the
National Defence Commission and supreme commander of the Peoples' Armed
Forces thanked the members of the company "for a wonderful performance".
He also expressed confidence that the State Merited Chorus "will inspire
people and the army with their revolutionary performances for construction
of a powerful and prosperous social state".
In the meantime, North Koreans prepare for another major event: the
local mass media reported that delegates of a nation-wide conference of
the Korean Workers' Party started converging on Pyongyang. A specific date
of the forum is not divulged.
Last week, party committees and organisations of cities, districts,
provinces, the Korean People's Army, security forces, of various
ministries and departments elected their representatives to the
conference. Speaker of the North Korean parliament Kim Yong Nam, cabinet
chairman Choe Yong Rim and other leaders of the country spoke at the
meetings of party activists. Each of the meetings approved a resolution on
electing Kim Jong-Il a delegate to the conference.
Meeting speakers emphasised that the general secretary of the Workers'
Party and chairman of the National Defence Commission "is now the supreme
representative of the DPRK, a symbol of dignity, glory and invincibility
of its army and people".
The Rodong Sinmun newspaper notes that the forthcoming party
conference "is of huge importance for the strengthening of confidence
people experience in the party, for the strengthening of their unity".
Last time a party forum of such a scale was held in the country in 1966.
