Police find clue to three unexploded Bangkok bombs

BANGKOK, Sept 9 - Thai police say three unexploded bombs found in the capital and the neighbouring province of Nonthaburi were the work of the same group and police are collecting evidence to seek an arrest warrant for the person whose likeness was captured by a surveillance camera of the Public Health Ministry.

The three bombs--one found near a Bangkok school Wednesday morning, and two others at a department store in the Bangkok neighbourhood of Ngamwongwan and the Public Health Ministry in suburban Nonthaburi early Thursday--were of a design not seen before in the capital's violence.

Pol Gen Panupong Singhara Na Ayutthaya, an advisor to the Royal Thai Police, said the bombs at three locations are connected to the same group of people who do not want to see peace in the country, but he declined to speculate whether or not state officials in uniform might have been involved in the incidents.

All three bombs were set to be able to detonate within a seven-day time and the equipment used in the three bombs are the same. This kind of bomb has never been found in previous Bangkok bombings, Gen Panupong noted.

The senior police officer however cautioned that people should not jump to the conclusion that the bombs are related to the continuing insurgency in the southern border provinces unless evidence is found although their patterns are similar.

It was the latest group of incidents in the wake of recent grenade attacks and bombings in the capital, which remains under a state of emergency after the deadly 10-week anti-government Red Shirt protest ending in May left 89 people dead.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said he has instructed heightened security after intelligence reports warning of possible untoward incident over the next two weeks, including the planned gathering of the red shirts to mark the military coup four years ago on September 19.

"As I have repeatedly said that the agitators are linked with politics. The only solution to the problem is to separate politics from those who stage attacks," he said, adding that the recent violence might have been the work of some elements who are against national reconciliation.
