Russian, Irish presidents to discuss RF-EU strategic partnership.

MOSCOW, September 9 (Itar-Tass) -- President Dmitry Medvedev will meet
Irish President Mary McAleese on Thursday, September 9, to discuss
bilateral cooperation, including in the field of high technologies, and
strategic partnership between Russia and the European Union, including
visa-free travel.
McAleese is in Russia on a working visit. This is the trip to Russia
by a president of Ireland since the establishment of diplomatic relations
between the two countries in 1973.
McAleese will also visit St. Petersburg. She said the purpose of the
visits is to strengthen and enhance political, economic and cultural ties
between the two countries.
"During the negotiations the presidents plan to synchronise their
watches on bilateral and international issues," the presidential press
service said. "High-level Russian-Irish contacts have intensified lately.
Trade and economic cooperation is increasing, particularly in such sectors
as innovations and high technologies."
"Despite the aftermath of the world financial crisis, common positive
dynamics continues in bilateral trade and economic cooperation, largely
due to Irish business's long-term interests in Russia as an attractive
partner in this field," the press service said.
In the first five months of the year, bilateral trade turnover
increased by 25.1 percent from the same period of last year, reaching
444.6 million U.S. dollars.
As regards the volume of accumulated foreign investment in the Russian
economy, Ireland now reached the level of major Western countries
traditionally present on the Russian market and is among the top ten
foreign investors for this index (over 9.2 billion U.S. dollars in the
first quarter of 2010).
In the second quarter this year Ireland was seventh among the
countries with the largest accumulated investments in the economy of
Russia, exceeding Japan and the U.S.
On Wednesday, September 8, McAleese met with ROSNANO head Anatoly
Chubais to discuss a programme of cooperation in the field of
nanotechnologies, which calls for joint development of projects.
She is also scheduled to have talks with Patriarch Kirill of Moscow
and All Russia and Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, and with St. Petersburg
Governor Valentina Matviyenko in St. Petersburg.
McAleese will also give a speech at the Foreign Ministry's Diplomatic
Academy and St. Petersburg University of Economics and Finance.
