Suthep: Security alert at government, private offices after three bombs found

BANGKOK, Sept 9 - Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban on Thursday said he ordered tightened security at key government offices and private buildings after three explosive devices were found and defused in the capital and neighbouring province of Nonthaburi.

Police said an explosive device was found in front of a Bangkok school Wednesday morning. Two more were found overnight in a shopping mall and a public health ministry car park in adjacent Nonthaburi province. The bombs were later defused.

Mr Suthep, who supervises national security, said there have been attempts by some anti-government elements to stir up disturbances, adding that he instructed security personnel at public offices and private buildings to become more vigilant.

The deputy prime minister said, however, that the three incidents were neither connected to Wednesday's bomb threat against THAI Airways International flight TG794 from Bangkok to Los Angeles nor the emergency decree which remains in place in Bangkok and six other
provinces.

Regarding a police warning that he and Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva might be targeted for assassination, Mr Suthep said he and the prime minister continue to work normally but remain vigilant.

The deputy prime minister also said the he instructed the Centre for Resolution of Emergency Situations (CRES) to closely monitor any activities of the anti-government Red Shirts before their planned September 19 gathering to mark the coup four years ago ousting prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

So far intelligence report indicates no imminent violence, but the police will prepare preventive measures for his consideration on Friday, Mr Suthep said.

The latest unexploded bombs were found in the wake of a series of grenade attacks in the capital which remains under a state of emergency after the deadly red shirt protests ended in May. (MCOT online news)
