GROUP OF INTELLECTUALS CALLS ON PRESIDENT TO ANNUL AMENDMENTS TO '45 CONSTITUTION

Jakarta, July 28 (ANTARA) - A group of Indonesian intellectuals Monday called on President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to issue a decree annulling all amendments to the 1945 Constitution.

"By the grace of God Almighty, we implore President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to issue a decree annulling all amendments and/or alterations to the 1945 Constitution," the group said in a letter to the president.

The letter was sent by Amin Aryoso, Ridwan Saidi, Haryanto Taslam and Husni Ibrahim to the State Secretariat for further conveyance to the president.

The two-page letter was a follow-up to the results of the group's meeting themed "Reflection on 63 Years of Independence, the Problems and Their Solutions" held in Jakarta on July 20.

About 25 figures, including Ir. Sunardi, Djon Pakan, M. Achadi, Prof. Usep Ranawijaja, Tyasno Sudarto, Lt. Gen. (ret) Suharto, Prof. Dr. Jim Wiryawan SH were present and had signed the meeting's results.

At the meeting, they exchanged views, discussed the numerous problems facing the nation and ways to solve them, Amin Aryoso said.

"Based on the results of the discussions, the participants agreed to issue a joint statement titled "Annul the Amendments to the 1945 Constitution," he said.

Ridwan Saidi said the joint statement which contained the conclusions from the exchange of views at the meeting was meant as a suggestion to the state.

"For the sake of the state's future and in line with the spirit, basis and goal of the proclamation of Indonesia's independence on August 17, 1945, we hope the president will consider our joint statement and take concrete and clear steps," he said.

The scholars opined the decisions taken in four rounds of national deliberations to amend the 1945 Constitution had led to a split rather than a sharing of state power and as a result, each of the supreme state institutes now wielded its own power and sovereignty without any control.

They also said the ongoing democratization process had not worked as expected. Instead, it had tended to result in chaos due to the influence of money and a lack of maturity on the part of the political elite.

"Leaving these things uncontroled will bring the country to the verge of destruction," the statement said.

Therefore, Haryanto Taslam expressed hope the president would pay attention to the group's joint statememt.
