Suspected bomber arrested in Yala

YALA, Sept 8 – A suspected insurgent with an outstanding arrest warrant related to a number of bombing incidents in the restive province of Yala was detained Wednesday morning at a house in the provincial seat, according to a senior police officer.

Maromae Manomaneng, 32, was apprehended when 30 soldiers and police officers raided a house in the the Yala provincial seat.

The arrest followed an investigation that found the suspect currently stayed at the place he was arrested, according to Pol Maj Gen Suchat Theerasawat, special investigation chief from the Southern Border Provinces Police Operations Centre.

After the arrest, Mr Maromae immediately was sent to the Peace Protection Center in Yala for further investigation.

In accordance with his suspected criminal record, Mr Maromae was given an arrest warrant on charges of allegedly being a national security threat, planting a bomb and participating in the murder of government officials in Kabang district.

In addition, he was accused of being involved in ambushes using firearms and bombs in Yaha and Bannang Sata districts.

The violence in the three southernmost provinces has intensified since 2004 with over 4,200 people killed and thousands of injured persons.

Recently, unrest intensified with a series of arsons across six districts of Narathiwat Sunday evening and a teacher and his wife were shot by suspected insurgents on Tuesday.

The shooting attack in Narathiwat left the teacher dead while his wife was seriously wounded as the couple were riding a motorcycle to the market in Rangae district.

Following the killing, the teachers' federation in the three southernmost Thai border provinces decided to close 365 schools considered in at-risk areas of Narathiwat for three days for safety reasons. (MCOT online news)
