Iran pursuing peaceful n-program: Pakistani researcher

Islamabad, Sept 8, IRNA -- Syed Qandil Abbas, Professor of International Relations in International Islamic University on Tuesday said that Iran being a responsible state is only pursuing a peaceful nuclear program.
Talking to IRNA, he said that latest International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report has also confirmed the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program.
He added Iran being signatory of Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) can use nuclear energy for peaceful means.
“Iran should be allowed to develop its nuclear program without any pressure”, Qandil Abbas viewed.
He said that the IAEA has failed so far to find any evidence against peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program. “Iranian nuclear program is not channeled towards making nuclear weapons”, he made it clear.
Qandil Abbas expressing his views said that Iran's Ambassador to the UN nuclear watchdog Ali Asghar Soltanieh has rightly noted that latest IAEA report on Iran's nuclear activities reaffirms Tehran's commitment to the agency's rules.
Commenting on the report released by IAEA's Director General Yukiya Amano, Iranian envoy to the watchdog group said 'After seven years of constant inspections, the report once again confirms the non-diversion of Iran's nuclear activities towards military and banned objectives.'
Qandil Abbas said despite the fact that Iran’s nuclear program is peaceful the UNSC has imposed sanctions on Islamic Republic which are unjustified.
He opined that sanctions have no legal sanctity as they are imposed in pursuance of the Western propaganda against Iran.
Qandil Abbas stated that the idea of imposing sanctions on Iran is not viable.
The Pakistani scholar said that as the Iran is signatory to NPT so the IAEA is bound to facilitate Iran in developing its nuclear program.
The intellectual opined there are many countries in the world that have not signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), yet they are being provided with assistance in their nuclear activities.
He said that Iran has been cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and following the international law regarding its nuclear program.
On May 17, Iran, Turkey and Brazil issued a declaration based on which Tehran agreed to exchange the bulk of its low-enriched uranium on Turkish soil with fuel for the Tehran research reactor.
The US and its European allies snubbed the declaration and used their influence on the UN Security Council to press for fresh sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
Iran has criticized the UNSC sanctions arguing that as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and an IAEA member it has every right to pursue and benefit from nuclear technology for peaceful purposes./end
