Nusa Dua, Bali, July 28 (ANTARA) - First Lady Ani Yudhoyono was named "patron of micro finance" by the Indonesian micro finance community at a conference here Monday.
The award was symbolically presented by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate 2006, Muhammad Yunus, at the opening of the Asia-Pacific Regional Microcredit Summit.
Mrs. Yudhoyono was considered to have given great care and serious attention to women and poverty by developing programs such as 'Smart Cars' (mobile libraries) and the Healthy Women's and Prosperous Family Program (Perkasa).
"Madame Ani (Yudhoyono) has proven to care much for people in the middle- and lower-class groups of society. This is in accordance with the program of the micro finance community," secretary general of the Joint Movement of Indonesian Micro Finance Development Bambang Ismawan said here on Monday.
Being held from July 28 to 30, the Asia-Pacific Regional Microcredit Summit was officially opened by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
The Indonesian government through the Ministry of Cooperatives and Small and Micro Enterprises had launched the KUR (Kredit Usaha Rakyat - People's Entrepreneurship Credit) Program to facilitate poor people to get access to financial services. The program helps poor people in getting capital to start micro enterprises of their own.
The Summit's sessions will discuss topics such as "The Future of Microfinance: Visioning the Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How of Microfinance Expansion Over the Next 10 Years", "Solving the Problems of Asian Urban Slums: Innovations with and beyond Microfinance", "Transformation of Microfinance Operations from NGO to a Regulated MFI while Maintaining Social Mission", "Commercial Bank Participation in Microfinance: Options and Opportunities", and "Challenges in Microfinance, both in Agriculture and in Areas with Low Population Density".
