PRESIDENT EXPRESSES CONDOLENCES TO SYAHRIR'S FAMILY

Jimbaran, July 28 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has expressed his deepest condolences to the family of Dr Syahrir, an economic adviser in the Presidential Advisory Council (Wantimpres), who passed away in Singapore on Monday.

"We miss Dr Sjahrir who passed away after suffering from an illness. But we can do nothing because it is the will of the Almighty," President Yudhoyono said after a meeting with Prof Muhammad Yunus, the founder of Grameen Bank at the Intercontinental Hotel in Jimbaran, Bali, on Monday.

The head of state said Syahrir, a senior economist, was critical in expressing his ideas and problems just the way they were.

"In the development of our economic policy, Syahrir was very helpful to me as president and therefore it is my prayer that his soul will be accepted at the side of God Almighty," the head of state said.

The president added that he had contacted Syahrir's wife in Singapore by phone and encouraged her and the family to remain calm in the midst of such a situation.

Meanwhile, presidential spokesman Andi Malarangeng said the president would pay homage to the deceased at his home at 15 Menteng street, Central Jakarta, on Monday night.

"The hour for the president to pay tribute has yet to be fixed but it depends on the arrival of Syahrir's remains from Singapore and preparations at his home ," Malarangeng said.

Born in Kudus, Central Java, on 24 February 1945, Sjahrir passed away at Mount Elizabet Hospital in Singapore at 8 on Monday morning after undergoing treatment for lung cancer for a certain period of time.

Meanwhile, Wantimpres spokesman Iwanshan Wibisono said Syahrir's remains would be flown from Singapore to Jakarta by Singapore Airlines SQ-966 on Monday evening and arrive at Soekarno-Hatta Airport at about 7.20 p.m.

During his lifetime, Syahrir had written a number of books such as "Political Economics, an Essential Need of a Prospective Analysis" (1986), "Basic Needs in Indonesia: Economic, Political and Public Policiess" (1986), "The Nation's Balance" (1995), "Economic Crisis Towards Total Reforma" (1999), and "Transition Towards a New Indonesia" (2004).
